Buck Meek of Big Thief talks about his guitar pedals

Big Thief's debut album "Masterpiece" has been rocking our world this year - so much so that we named it The Deli NYC's Record of the Month back in July. We asked the band's guitarist Buck Meek (who also has a solo folk project we recommend checking out) to tell us about the stompboxes he uses when playing with the band; you can find his very thorough response on our sister blog Delicious Audio - link below! If you can afford it, tou can see Big Thief next on 12.03 at the Beacon Theater, sharing the stage with Cindy Lauper!

Big Thief unveils Luke Temple produced new song 'Mother' through Shaking Through series

Shaking Through is a Philly based documentary series about the process of recording music as seen through the eyes of today's most promising independent musicians. Their latest episode features two of our favorite NYC artists, both of whom were rewarded with our NYC Record of the Month, although about ten years apart. Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic produced the Big Thief yet unreleased track 'Mother' (streaming below) and... magic was delivered again.

NYC Record of the Month: "Masterpiece" by Big Thief

Throughout Masterpiece, the humbly sublime debut album from Brooklyn folk-rock quartet Big Thief, love braves through woe. As sung by the ever welcoming Adrienne Lenker, these painful yet vital songs near a height of beauty that reminds one of music’s transcendent power.

Following the nimble opener “Little Arrow,” the album starts its raw power with “Masterpiece” (streaming below), the rollicking single that deservedly drew attention a few months back with its panoramic view of searching souls. Like Bob Dylan’s generation-defining “Like a Rolling Stone” from the 1960s, this guitar-trickled song is both addicting and elegant, rough and pretty and, ultimately, lasting in its sheer soulfulness.

A series of lyrically vivid tracks named after potential lovers (“Paul” and “Randy,” for example) follows next, alongside guitar-winded cuts that briskly tackle such elusive motifs as romance and the transience of time, emitting an overall beatific aura in the process.

The type of record that has the possibility of transporting the listener to a calmer, perhaps better plain of existence, Masterpiece is not just the first offering from an intriguing new band but a preciously passionate work in and of itself. – Zach Weg

Buzz Alert! Big Thief plays Celebrate Brooklyn on 06.23 and Summer Stage in September

Brooklyn's Big Thief is the exemplification of what can happen to a band in one year when uncommon talent is matched by a great record, hard work and compelling live performances. The group, led by songwriter Adrianne Lenker, in just one year went from playing your usual Brooklyn venues in front of a few fans, to becoming one of the most talked about new indie acts out of NYC. Currently touring the US, Big Thief will be back in NYC on June 23rd for a live performance at the Prospect Park Shell within the Celebrate Brooklyn Fest. Later in September the band is also scheduled to open for Lucius at Central Park's Summer Stage. If this is not an emerging band with buzz, we don't know what is!
P.S. We are very proud to have premiered their video for single Masterpiece last year

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!
