Gigawatts mag going out with a bang (and many bands) @ Alphaville on May 14/15

1.21 Gigawatts - a Brooklyn DIY magazine that did a great job of covering the scene's punky, garagey and psych emerging bands - is sadly closing and it will be gracing us one final time with their hosting skills come this weekend at Alphaville. With Deli favorites like Dead Stars, HaybabyDances, and 11 more taking the stage we can expect a weekend of great music and spectacular shows. On top of getting 14 amazing bands performing in two days, it’s all just $10. Insane, right? It is always with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye, but Gigawatts really knows how to go out with a bang (and how to give you more bang for your buck). So head on over to Alphaville this Saturday and Sunday for some memorable performances. Check out the playlist below to get a feeling of what you’ll be listening. - Adriana Ballester

Cosmonaut unveils video from upcoming EP + lands Pianos residency

Anyone thirsty for a sound that's classic New York reinvented, should check out Cosmonaut. The band carries a torch for acts like Television and The Strokes, (they were even featured on 'Occupy This Album' alongside Patti Smith!), while bringing shades of dreamy (and more British leaning) pop shoe-gazery along for the ride. It's an ecstatic, melodic high that'll reconnect you to a New York before John Varvatos took over CBGB's, and at once transport you the (hopefully) warmer months ahead. The project of guitarist/singers, Fordham classmates Jack Manley and Daniel Quinn, Cosmonaut has been together since 2009, and is about to release its second EP ('Radio Silence') this April. Check out the trippy video for the title track below, and catch them at the first date of their Piano's April residency: next Tuesday, April 8th at 10pm. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Cosmonaut plays Legion 10.19

Cosmonaut is one of those bands that almost seem too good to be true. When I first listened to them, the first thing I thought was... ok, which one of these guys was in a supergroup and is now starting over fresh? Turns out, these guys are all starting fresh. Just out of school, the quartet sounds like they've been at this for years, displaying a maturity in their songwriting far beyond their lean years. Sounding something like Pavement's slack tied together with Cymbals Eat Guitars' epic emotionalism, Cosmonaut has 'hype' written all over them. Just listen to 'Hurry Up' EP opener 'Your Knife (My Side)' and hear what could be the envy of Julian Casablancas, coming through singer John Paul Manley's tenor. Produced by Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Wavves, Modest Mouse), the band's debut album is everything you want to hear from a young band in line with age old expectations of how classic rock songs is supposed to sound. Their next show is on Friday October 19th at Legion Bar, with Fast Years, The N'ere Dowells, & others. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
