Jangula

Jangula experiment heavily in new EP Ataraxia, play Trans-Pecos 05.07

Johnny Jewel and Daniel "Baby D" Bachrach are back at it again. Known collectively as Jangula, in their latest EP Ataraxia the duo offers music that's as stirring as ever. The eight-track festival of experimentation features an incredible pace with flashes of electronic textures, loose and fast guitar solos, swelling organ melodies, and deep vocals from Jewel that rip and tear themselves with frightful ease. From the indie-folk sound of “My Jubilee Gang” to the synth-driven tune “Experimental Alchemy” the band shows an ability to dabble in genres, picking and choosing what they see fit. Jangula will be bringing their sonic experiment to Trans-Pecos in Brooklyn on May 7. - Rene Cobar

Gigawatts mag going out with a bang (and many bands) @ Alphaville on May 14/15

1.21 Gigawatts - a Brooklyn DIY magazine that did a great job of covering the scene's punky, garagey and psych emerging bands - is sadly closing and it will be gracing us one final time with their hosting skills come this weekend at Alphaville. With Deli favorites like Dead Stars, HaybabyDances, and 11 more taking the stage we can expect a weekend of great music and spectacular shows. On top of getting 14 amazing bands performing in two days, it’s all just $10. Insane, right? It is always with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye, but Gigawatts really knows how to go out with a bang (and how to give you more bang for your buck). So head on over to Alphaville this Saturday and Sunday for some memorable performances. Check out the playlist below to get a feeling of what you’ll be listening. - Adriana Ballester

Ski Lodge and Jangula play joint Pianos residency in March

A few weeks ago we noticed how Pianos had doubled down in inviting local talent to play monthly residencies, and that observation finds a confirmation in the fact that in March the Ludlow Street venue will host a joint residency involving two Brooklyn bands: Jangula and Ski Lodge (pictured). Both groups have been around since the early '10s and have new releases in the works. They also share a sound that's tastefull poppy, with an indie rock edge. Check out their latest singles below and don't miss them live every Wednesday in March. The first show is tonight 03.04.

Jangula: "Strange Child" EP release at The Studio on 03.23

Birthed from Bushwick ugly warehouses and decadent weekends is a Brooklyn-based quartet called Jangula. Their new EP "Strange Child" (streaming below) takes some of those debaucherous nights and combines them with a utopian vibe that together bring to mind a post-apocalyptic Shangri-La. Their music has been described as "Beach Boys meets Joy Division" and more recently, The New Yorker compared them to the post punk UK pioneers The Monochrome Set. They are celebrating their album release at The Studio at Webster Hall on Friday, March 23rd. Get your free download of the album here and go debauch yourself you decadent thing! - Read Amanda Dissinger's interview with the band here.
