Riotgaze TÜLIPS brings Doom & Bloom to Non Plus Ultra

Some bands throw down their debut album a year into formation. Others go at it a little longer. For best friends Taleen Kali and Angie Bloom of TÜLIPS, it's been a four-year wait, but well worth it.

The dual guitarists/vocalists come from completely different musical backgrounds: Taleen's the "Doom", all about dirtbox growl and migraine-inducing feedback, while Angie's the "Bloom", slick with 50's jangle and doo-wop spirit. They're an unlikely pair, but continual back-and-forths with mixtapes have drawn these polar opposites together. And when glued down with drummer Travis Moore and bassist Miles Faster, TÜLIPS keep it classy, leaving local crowds reeling from tinnitus in pools of sweat. Don't believe me? Just ask the bands that shared their bills, like LA FONT and Bür Gür.

Doom & Bloom releases Friday the 13th from Lollipop Records. TÜLIPS' album release party will also include sets from Terminal A and BomBón, with a DJ set from L.A. Girlfriend. Listen to "Hotspur" below. - Ryan Mo, flyer art: Maritza Torres, Typeset: AJ Horton

Video: LA Font, "Onshore"

Slacker rock foursome LA Font continue their prolific streak with the video for the track "Onshore", a ramchackle lo-fi romp that finds them echoing the straightforward hooks of Robert Pollard. As for the visuals that accompany the track, well, imagine if the band takes the concept of "loose lips sink ships" into literal terms; the band members play guitar heroes as they fend off a flying army of vicious, computer animated lips causing havoc around Echo Park, Hitchock style. LA Font is currently touring the East Coast, but they'll be back soon enough. I mean, seriously, haven't you seen them yet?

LA Font Record Release tonight at The Echo

A celebratory atmosphere will be tangible at The Echo tonight as local favorites, LA Font, will be officially releasing their sophomore full length along with a raucous cast of noisemakers. The band has been slowly teasing out songs from the new album for several months. The official video for the title track, "Diving Man" encapsulates the band's straight forward, non-nonsense approach. Apparently the video is a 3-minute version of a larger mumble core film frontman Danny Bobbe and director David bores created together. Frontman Danny Bobbe is devoid of pretention and so the songs come across as such - sincere, vulnerable, and undeniably catchy. Head to The Echo tonight to catch the band in their element along with Spaceships, Washing Machines and Wax Children. 'Diving Man' is out now. - Jacqueline Caruso

Stream: LA Font, “Onshore”

Echo Park Indie Rock quartet, LA Font, have released the first single off their sophomore LP, ‘Diving Man’, due out later this year. “Onshore” showcases the best the band has to offer. Frontman Danny Bobbe’s playful, yet poetic lyrics are captivating and catchy. His unique vocal delivery comes off as if he doesn’t care if anyone’s listening, but he knows that we are. He’s that rare breed of clever, charismatic and cool - he knows how to write a hook, and he’ll actually entertain you while he performs it. When you add Jon Perry’s immensely addicting guitar wails, Greg Katz’s pristine, driving bass line, and Harlow Rodriguez’s tasteful percussion elements, it’s obvious this is one radio-friendly rock tune that even mainstream haters will want to turn up with their windows down. Besides, when was the last time you heard references to Kevin Costner and Leo Dicaprio in the same song? - Jacqueline Caruso
