Irreverent genre-wanderers Seldomo are seemingly never comfortable putting out the same flavor of music album after album. Their latest double single Insomnia / Scrap King is a hard pivot from their 2017 folk-tinged LP Probably Cool, informed by the same delightfully weird songwriting yet noticeably more discordant; both tracks’ psych-surf-stoner-rock sound feature heavy riffs, an abrasive drive, and the additional saxophone accents. It’s recommended listening for fans of The Oh Sees and screaming in general; jam it below, and catch Seldomo at Hart Bar on December 20th.

In the past few years, the DIY scene (re)discovered roots music, and we are not mad about it (anymore). For Queens-based band Seldomo, Americana is a fun place to get a little weird. Their 2017 album Probably Cool pays homage to all the best country/Americana tropes, but with the off-kilter sensibilities of lo-fi and slacker rock. It's a bit reminiscent of Alex G’s Rocket, although Seldomo has a flavor all their own, bringing in the unexpected mandolins and accordions alongside the standby guitars. At Alphaville on February 3rd, the band will sing to you about strangers walking dogs at midnight and meeting past lovers by rivers, all with their own flair. "When things seem hard Seldomo is there to remind you that things are probably cool and you'll be alright." So reads the blurb from Seldomo's Bandcamp page, and man, if there's something that we need to hear at the end of 2017, it's that even when it seems like the world is crashing down, in all likelihood, in the end, we can still find a way to make (most) things work. Alt-folk artist, Seldomo, aims to express just that sentiment in his latest album, Probably Cool. The release is no-fuss folk-inspired music that at times can feel lax in its execution, but perhaps that's one of the things that makes it so charming. 1. Mappa Mundi- 7.8 (out of 10)

 Almost a year ago exactly, New York chamber pop six-piece released ‘At Sea,’ which is more of a sonic novella than a traditional EP. On such wistful, guitar-strummed songs and horn-sloped tracks such as “So Obscure” and “Mirabelle” (streaming below), the Adam B Levine-led band imbued poignant scenes of love and loss with a literary purity that was not only impressive in its vividness but preciously moving in its effect. Mappa Mundi plays Pete’s Candy Store on 2/5.

2. Big Thief- 7.7 (out of 10)

Almost sounding like an indie folk version of Allen Ginsberg’s eternal poem ‘Howl,’ “Masterpiece” (music video playing below) by Brooklyn’s Big Thief is a guitar-fuzzed portrait of people searching for serenity. Especially memorable with the soothing vocals of Adrianne Lenker, the poignant song marks Big Thief—which released the quietly strong ‘side-as’ two years ago—as a group not just that conveys, but almost, celebrates pain. Big Thief, currently on tour with Here We Go Magic, plays The Bowery Ballroom on 2/18.

3. Echoscape- 7.7 (out of 10)

On the May-released ‘Square Two’ EP, Brooklyn “math folk” project Echospace (aka Satoshi Inoue) doesn’t so much play the guitar as conure it into being. On such sweetly fleeting songs as “Rainsong” or “Undulating Place,” one marvels at the deeply deft musician’s ability to convey the deepest of emotions with a single strum. Echospace plays The Shop Brooklyn on 1.29.
