Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process.

First, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 30+ NYC scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music NYC produced in the year 2012, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Skaters win The Deli Writers' Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists

Deli-rious beings,

In our insanely convoluted (but SUPERBLY accurate) system governing our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artist, our writers have a rather influential vote. Here are the results of this specific poll (top 3 positions only).

Quite unexpectedly, indie guitar-pop trio Skaters (pictured) took home the gold (the band is currently recording their debut LP, needless to say we are looking forward to it!), with the silver going to electro-pop masters St. Lucia and 10 bands getting a sliver of bronze.

Skaters release new video + play Bowery on 09.19

Brooklyn's Skaters are hard at work to become one of the most fun indie rock band in NYC. This is the second video they release this year. Probably inspired by* the [orange sexy alert if you browse from work!!!] Esquire video of Daisy Lowe dancing on the track "Tiger" by Dave Sitek's Maximum Balloon, their new video of "I Wanna Dance" focus its attention on a cute African American girl dancing in various places - probably in Brooklyn. Enjoy it below and don't miss their next show when they'll be opening for the Whigs on September 19th at the Bowery Ballroom.

*Some of our more open minded writers (we pretty much only listen to NYC bands) suggest that this video could be an answer to the [blue sexy alert if you browse from work!!!] Black Keys' video of "Lonely Boy".

Weekly Feature: Skaters - Live at Brooklyn Bowl on 07.28

Upbeat, catchy and serenely produced, Skaters' debut EP Schemers is a refreshing return to groove in an otherwise frenetic aural genre. Their songs call to grand truths of times past. They sing love songs shrouded in clairvoyant wisdom. Skaters’sound teeters on the edge of two musical genres – one foot in the up-tempo pop-punk world, the other knee deep in worldly grooves that feel timeless. Their live shows feature impromptu improvisations and unexpected interludes – proof that they are competent musicians, masterful in their ways. Three different people, hailing from three different places (Boston, LA and the UK), Skaters come together with a coherent melancholy that harkens back to The Strokes when they were cool. Schemers has the exciting feeling of the start to something beautiful. - Read Ed Guardaros' interview with the band here.

Skaters release video for "Done for Good"

Skaters is one of the most interesting new indie rock bands highlighted in our latest year end Best of NYC Emerging Artists Poll. The band was formed less than one year ago and consists of Michael Cummings and Noah Rubin (The Dead Trees, Adam Green, Little Joy), who spent a year trading demos back and forth from Los Angeles to London with Guitarist Joshua Hubbard (The Paddingtons, Dirty Pretty Things). The three met in the middle to record an EP in a Manhattan loft, and never left the city.Skaters just released this video of the song "Done for Good" from their debut "SCHEMERS" EP - which can be downloaded for free here.
