Sun Airway

New Track: "All In" (Feat. Cynthia G. Mason) - Sun Airway

Before 2016 ended, we were delighted by the news of Sun Airway's return after a four-year hiatus with his single "FOAM". And now, just barely into 2017, we are treated once again to the second sampling from his forthcoming LP, Heraldic Black Cherry, called "All In". The vibrant calm of Sun Airway's latest track also features backing vocals by Philly singer-songwriter Cynthia G. Mason.

New Track: "FOAM" - Sun Airway

Sun Airway delighted listeners with their 2010 debut LP Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier (Dead Oceans), so much so that it earned them The Deli Philly's Artist of the Year honors. However, after their 2012 follow-up Soft Fall (Dead Oceans), from our talks with frontman Jon Barthmus, it sounded like he was ready to leave behind the life of a struggling musician on the road for a simpler one at home, after all he had already spent years fronting his previous band Vagrant Records' The A-Sides. Thankfully, it didn't mean that he completely stopped recording music. Though Barthmus would now prefer Sun Airway to be strictly a studio project, we are very excited to hear the first single, "FOAM" (below), from its upcoming release Heraldic Black Cherry, which is currently scheduled to be self-released early next year.

New Track: "When Will I Be Loved?" (The Everly Brothers Cover) - Sun Airway

It's been quite a while since we've heard from the Sun Airway camp. When we last talked with frontman Jon Barthmus about a year ago, it seemed like he was content with taking some time off from doing shows and recording. Well, we guess that the passing of The Everly Brothers' Phil Everly provided Barthmus with a bit of inspiration to record a cover of their classic hit "When Will I Be Loved?" using an iPhone and ukelele. RIP Phil.

Weekend Warrior, January 4 - 6

Sun Airway’s lush arrangements and massive textures of sound will be filling the beloved second floor of Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday night. It feels like it’s been a bit since I’ve heard Jon Barthmus’ smooth, breathy baritone live. And hopefully Klip Collectives’ Ricardo Rivera will be manning the new lights at JB’s to bring the band’s dreamy tunes to an otherworldly place. Sun Airway will also be joined by Brooklyn’s Historics and Cruiser, the sweet indie pop project from Andy States, so you have good reasons to get there early and spend the whole night. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Weekend Warrior, October 5 - 7

Well, it’s time to get rad with Making Time at Voyeur tonight, and very little is radder than a $2 Bill Making Time, especially when Deli faves Sun Airway are the featured act for the night. The band recently release their new LP Soft Fall (check out the review of our October Album of the Month HERE) earlier this week, and they just hopped off tour with M83 for one night to spend it with you so feel a bit special Philly. As always, expect futuristic sounds from Dave P and the gang as well as a SICK light show from Klip Collective’s Ricardo Rivera. Voyeur, 1221 St. James St., 9pm, $2, 21+ - H. M. Kauffman
