Best of Nashville Garage Rock Acts: The Saturns

Our Best of Nashville 2017 poll began last week with the Garage Rock category and after you-the-people cast your vote, we have the results to share with you!

Overall Poll winner (Jurors vote + Readers' vote): The Saturns

Readers' Poll Winner (Readers' Vote only): The Saturns

The Saturns come at garage rock from a unique angle. Bringing in elements of classic rock and blues, they tow the line between the kind of heavy, pentatonic guitar style that characterized rock in the 60s and 70s and the fuzzy, lo-fi timbre so common to independent rock records that have come out Nashville's basements for the past decade. They've mastered the art of displaying musicianship without the kind of braggadocio that too often ruins contemporary takes on classic rock. The songs are functional and refined. Nothing exists in them that doesn't contribute to their overall structures, and even flashy instrumentals and solos act as integral building blocks. The composition is well planned despite feeling improvised, much in the same way retro rock bands like The Black Keys find fertile creative space in the peaks and valleys of blues bars, The Saturns take advantage of the variety and opportunity in every little flourish and riff of a song.

Honorable mentions go to Thelma and The Sleaze (second in the overall chart) and Daddy Issues (second in the Reader's poll). The full list of nominees can be found under the streaming tracks.

Butthole kicks off Thelma & the Sleaze's documentary premiere on 01.13

Up and comers in Butthole open up for Thelma and the Sleaze's intra-city tour documentary about playing 30 shows in 29 days at a series of surprise locations across Nashville. Butthole is a goofy, psychedelic, fuzz rock outfit that doesn't take itself too seriously. Their tunes are a blend of charming, surfy, laid back Mac Demarco-esque attitude with just enough edge to be remiscent of female punk rockers from Patti Smith to Carrie Brownstein. The show, at Little Harpeth Brewing, starts at 9 PM on Friday night with a $10 cover that includes a limited edition Kandyland Vinyl.

An Interview with Thelma and the Sleaze

Thelma and the Sleaze caught me off guard the first time I saw them; I just wasn’t prepared for the blaze of bare skin and brazen intensity that the band delivered. But it needed to happen; I didn’t realize it at the time, but my brain wanted to be wallered by those three writhing banshees. I left the show with the same stupid satisfaction I get from breathing gasoline fumes at Mapco, maybe a tick tougher for surviving the onslaught.

The band is preparing for a double header this Friday, 11/15, to mark the release of their double EP box set. They are first performing in Mufreesboro at Mayday Brewery at 7, and then in Nashville at the Stone Fox at 9. More details are available here. This video for "Too Tough" is a close approximation of what to expect. Being the Southern belles they are, the band obliged me by answering a few interview questions. -Terra James-Jura

Interview with Thelma and the Sleaze
- by Terra James-Jura

Being the Southern belles they are, the band obliged me by answering a few interview questions.

There’s not too much about you girls online in the way of a bio.  Who are you, how long have you been a band, and how did you find each other?

LG (guitar, vocals) and Baby Angel (bass) were in a band called Trampskirts.  That band broke up, so they formed Thelma and the Sleaze. Chase (drums) and LG were both into backyard and kitchen wrestling, plus Chase smacked the shit out of the drums. She joined a year and a half ago. Since then we have released three EPs and two videos, proliferation-station slam dunk.

I first caught you at the Exit/Inn in April when you opened for the Detroit Cobras.  As I recall (and I may be wrong) this was the last date of a tour.  I would love to hear a little about how it went (incidents, characters, misadventures, etc)

We love being on the road in our church van Snow Leopard. We fill travel time by playing Black Jack tournaments. LG had an ear infection in Philly and found a guy outside a 7/11 in a trench coat and flip flops who had a mountain dew bottle full of peroxide. Real sweetheart. Chase went walking by herself and found a limo driver in Lexington who drove her and LG around eating pizza and listening to Sabbath. We played two shows in Cleveland in one night, then rode on two guys’ shoulders around the bar in a Kentucky Derby-style race. Baby Angel hadn't even been to NYC so she got really wasted and tried to steal a blow up doll. LG likes to bring a baby grill made out of a tin coffee can and lighter fluid and makes tacos in the alleys behind venues. Also in Philadelphia we stayed at the warehouse where scenes from Martin Lawrence’s “Big Mama's House” were filmed, and it had a giant rope swing inside of it.

Tell me about Bitchfest.

We play with a lot of really cool bands throughout the year. So we put together 3 days in Nashville at 3 different venues and get as many of those awesome bands back as we can, we also try and showcase local bands that we love, give out Planned Parenthood material and try our best to help out a good charity.

Okay, you call yourselves Southern Sludge.  I need an example from each member just how Southern you are.

Cowgirls from Hell listen to our jamz at www.thelmaandthesleaze.bandcamp.com. If you don't hear a lil’ Billy G, Memphis Minnie or hell-raising, coked-out Tanya Tucker in your ear, then YOU need to question how Southern YOU are.

What did you want to be when you were sweet, innocent little girls, before you turned into, well, what you are now…?

LG, Chase and Baby Angel decline to do any background checks as part of this interview ;) But it goes without saying that we have always dedicated ourselves to finding mostly safe mostly legal ways to harness our aggression and be around other crazies.

What do you do apart from music?

LG is a analog electronic/ motorcycle enthusiast/ weekend-fisher person, Emily houses stray dogs and builds corporate break rooms and gyno exam cabinetry, Chase flies planes and sells whole slaughtered pigs to rich people SHOUT OUT ROLF & DAUGHTERS.

How many marriage proposals have you received?  What will it take for you to say yes?

We are all exclusively committed to our TATS girl Polly "Red.” She is the love of our lives and is on the cover of two of our EP's. The classiest Tawny Kitaen you'll ever meet. She took the Mustang, the good assault rifle, and our best hunting dog…still love her though.

Take this space and use it to plug anything you want, your video, your label, new music, go nuts.

We love you KEGHUNTER MCC LEXINGTON!

We are self-releasing a DOUBLE EP BOXXX SET OUT 11/15 "Palmela Handerson" and "These Boots Won't Lick Themselves". To celebrate we are playing a double city release party in Murfreesboro at the MAYDAY BREWERY at 7pm and in Nashville at THE STONE FOX at 9pm  with dreamboats PUJOL and Sugarpie Reid Magette. LOVE YOU CREEPERZZZZZZ!!!!! CREEPER ARMY FOREVAA!!!!
