Six talented NYC female musicians play Deli sponsored event The Hum on 10.05

Intimate shows in living room (or other comfortable small spaces not strictly set up to host live music) are gaining steam these days - and not only in NYC. In Brooklyn, Hypnocraft has booked several shows for series held at the cozy (as in charmingly small) Manhattan Inn restaurant in Greenpoint. Gone are the old-school pianists entertaining diners with watered down cover songs, replaced by respected local artists like Sam Cohen and Shilpa Ray playing songs from their original repertoire. Crowds are often so reverent you can hear a pin drop. Hypno’s second series is called “The Hum.” Its mission, says founder Rachael Pazdan, “is to connect a diverse community of women making music in New York City.” Those words couldn't fall on deaf ears here at The Deli, therefore, we decided to sponsor these events!

On The Hum's first night this upcoming Monday (10.05) half a dozen of talented local ladies will grace the stage of the Manhattan Inn - we are particularly excited because the majority of them has received generous coverage in this very blog. Being a collaborative night, the performances are organized in couples: accomplished singer-songwriter Larkin Grimm (previously a member of Dirty Projectors) will perform together with drummer Lia Simone (ex drummer for The Butcherettes and Gothic Tropic). Mercurial singer and composer Alena Spanger of Tiny Hazard (a band we celebrated in 2013 with a "Deli NYC Video of the Month") will surely try something quirky during her shared performance with dreamy folksinger Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief. After them, we should expect some electronic instruments on stage, when Nandi Rose Plunkett of Half Waif and Johanna Cranitch of White Prism will join forces (and their beautiful voices) to entertain us.

Hear each artist's own music in the playlist below, and don't miss their creative interaction on Monday October 05 at the Manhattan Inn - we'll be there!

White Prism announces debut LP "Open Heart Job" + lands Ace Hotel April residency

We booked NYC electro pop princess White Prism (aka Johanna Cranitch) for one of our 2013 CMJ shows - before she turned blonde. We are happy to see she's finally ready to release her debut LP, entitled "Open Heart Job" and scheduled for an April release. White Prism recently unveiled a video for single "patience" and another single entitled "Shake You Off," both streaming, and both featured in the upcoming full length. Don't miss her residency at Ace Hotel on every Sunday in April.

Weekly Feature: Johanna Cranitch Goes Electronic in White Prism

Having arrived in New York as an aspiring audio engineer, Johanna Cranitch instead made a name for herself in the city’s broad indie-pop scene under the guise Johanna and the Dusty Floor. Since recently repackaging herself as White Prism, the Australian is now investigating a long-standing interest in more electronic-based instrumentation, and has already cut one of the most accomplished releases within the genre to come out of NYC in recent memory with the project’s smooth, soulful self-titled debut EP. - LINKS: Read Dean Van Nguyen's interview with White Prism.

White Prism debuts EP + plays Glasslands on 04.23

Wondering what Johanna Cranitch is up to? Have no fear... she has not abandoned us - quite the opposite. Coming up with an entirely new moniker to join her already crowded list of personas (known in part for her always surprising Johanna & The Dusty Floor, also backup singer for The Cranberries), Johanna has now given us the beats-based, stripped down goodness of White Prism. Apparently she began this group's songwriting sessions looking for something melodic and roots-based, but threw out the demo after deciding to pursue synth dream pop instead. And we're all the better for it. New video 'Lover's Dream' (from upcoming EP 'White Prism') comes complete with evocative images, and syrupy watercolors abound. Check out below also single "Dance On". See White Prism live at Glasslands on April 23 with Home Video and Desert Stars. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
