Work Drugs

A Work Drugs Christmas Spectacle w/The City and Horses & Teen Men at JB’s Dec. 14

If the idea of sleek, dance-inducing synth-pop is on your radar, head to Johnny Brenda’s tonight for A Work Drugs Christmas Spectacle. Work Drugs have a soothing alluring tone as if the whispered vocals are secrets shared between close acquaintances. The synth/percussion/bass union generates subtle calculated grooves that garner appreciation for the shifts and changes throughout a song. The music envelops you in an intimately intense yet cozy dancing haze - one that you may want to embrace for the evening. Tonight also marks a rare opportunity to catch the delightfully eccentric open-book, pop stylings of The City and Horses. Kicking the night off will be Teen Men, an intriguing project that looks to explore the interaction between multiple mediums using video projections throughout the performance. The group includes Nick Krill and Joe Dobson of the Spinto Band as well as photographer Catherine Maloney and local filmmaker Albert Birney. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New Track & Music Video: "Bellport Bay" - Work Drugs

Funny - we were just thinking last night that Work Drugs have their first all-ages show at the First Unitarian Church tomorrow with Lockets and Bridge Underwater so they be releasing a new song and video to promote it. And of course, we found them this morning in our email. It's a laidback jam - even more so than the usual Work Drugs number, and this time, the band took footage from the 1992 stinker Captain Ron, featuring one of our least favorite actors Kurt Russell and a comedian who hasn't made us laugh in a long time, Martin Short. There are also guest vocals on the track from Philly native Ryan Williams. You can download "Bellport Bay" for free HERE.

New Track & Music Video: "Modern Living" - Work Drugs

Work Drugs just posted a new track, "Modern Living," and their signature found footage music video. It also came with a quote from Tom Wolfe (below). They'll be performing their first all-ages show on Friday, September 27 at the First Unitarian Church.

"I think every living moment of a human being's life, unless the person is starving or in immediate danger of death in some other way, is controlled by a concern for status."

New Music Video: "Digital Girl" - Work Drugs

Below is a new music video from Work Drugs for the track "Digital Girl," which "explores the depths of your digital soul by reminding us of those digital ghosts that were once with us... but are now outdated by newer and sexier upgrades. This is a tribute." It features clips from the 90's television series Weird Science with Vanessa Angel that is based off the classic 80's John Hughes movie with the same name starring Kelly LeBrock and Anthony Michael Hall. You can also download "Digital Girl" for free HERE.
