Cairns "Bleak Midwinter"

Guitarist Cairns has released a new single called “Bleak Midwinter”. This is ambient, atmospheric, and chaotic in all the best and most dreary ways.

He also released an improvised track last month called “No Sun”. It seems like this gray Chicago winter is hitting Cairns hard.

Katie Burden’s “Edge of Sleep”

Avant rock performer Katie Burden just released the title track of her forthcoming album Edge of Sleep, and it is a captivating representation of the song. Burden, who has spent the last few between San Francisco, Los Angles and New York, created the album with a new level of consciousness. Of the name, Burden says, “There’s that ancient Toltec wisdom that describes our conscious life as a waking dream that we sort of project into the world…’Edge of Sleep’ refers to an occurrence that shakes one from their waking dream and brings about a new perspective or way of seeing.” Title track lies somewhere between Björk and Florence and the Machine. The video depicts the frustrating place between awake and conscious and emotion, dragging a woman through a house where she can’t seem to decompress. Enjoy Burden’s new video and keep an eye out for her full album Edge of Sleep out January 30, 2020. -Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor

Jason McMahon’s “Book of Knots” finds contemporary within the classical, plays Roulette Intermedium 1.22

Multi-instrumentalist dreamweaver Jason McMahon developed his forthcoming LP Odd West with the intention of crafting music he could play for his parents and wedding ceremonies. This mindset produced an end result that is a grounded yet experimental acoustic effort, one centered around McMahon’s noodling guitar performance and bolstered by avant-garde vocal and electronic flourishes. Single “Book of Knots” encapsulates his mentality well; string arpeggios both major and minor play center stage, surrounded by various dreamlike accents from synth, electric guitar, and flute, all contributing to final effort that has all the trappings of familiar instrumental classical music with a wholly modern spin. Quietly enjoy it below, and catch Jason McMahon at Roulette Intermedium on January 22nd for the album’s release show.
