Punk

Weekend Warrior, December 21 - 23

Composed, personal narratives with crisp instrumentation filling in the details, the songs of Truth In Comedy (Lame-O Records) from Steady Hands travel down the road in a revealing confidently cathartic manner. Blending emotive honesty with an enthusiastic and, at times, humorous, anthem-generating quality, it balances waves of good-natured punk that everyone at the bar can join in on. Yet, those themes/stories will resonate as you make your way home. This Saturday evening, Steady Hands will be headlining a Home Outgrown showcase at Everybody Hits. They’ll also be joined by the vulnerable, raw rock of Earth Telephone, the sincere songwriting of Major Pursuit, and the powerful, affecting folk of Julia Rainer to complete the billing. Bay Faction celebrates release of debut LP at Elsewhere on 12.21

If you are stuck with the notion that emo has become the unbearably whiny expression of spoiled suburban kids, enter Boston's Bay Faction (who recently relocated to the NYC area) and  think again. Their 2015 three-track debut EP clearly carries the genre's DNA, but slows down its BPM by a lot, makes a discreet if not spare use of distorted guitars, and puts a lot of sincere heart in it. Those early tracks resonated with a lot of kids and gathered over a million plays on Spotify, and so did following single Pendulum, dropped in 2017. After a dragged out recording process, the band is now ready to release their debut LP Florida Guilt, a record that expands the group's sonic palette with a more varied production, without betraying the core qualities of their music. The first single It's Perfect, streaming below, is to date their fastest and most driven track, but still stylistically hybrid, with the inwardly tortured voice of singer James McDermott adding oozes of character to vague lyrics related to the struggles of dating. The record is already available on Spotify, and fans of Pingrove and Forth Wanderers (two other bands that are taking emo in new directions) should definitely check it out.

New Music Video: "Unreasonable Rider" - Fine Jewelers

The creative pairing of Matt Korvette (Pissed Jeans) & DP Helmer, a.k.a. Fine Jewelers, recently dropped its debut EP Braindance Through The Midnight D - Beat via BANK Records. “Unreasonable Rider” dispenses noise-laced, ultra-pulsating beats as distorted roaring vocals reign down over the top. Unrelenting intensity tips the techno scales the limits. Its video, which stars and is directed by Hackey Garbáge, is a lavish, humorous display, whose calm demeanor is in direct contrast to the track's sonic aggression.

Plastic Weather's New Music Video

Plastic Weather just dropped a music video for their song "Doppelgänger." Filmed entirely on an iPhone, the video is fast and chaotic. It shows the members wandering around the Enchanted Forest theme park, wearing a variety of crazy, menacing, ridiculous masks. It’s enchantingly creepy. If Alice in Wonderland was a synth-based musical, it would look a lot like this music video. The goofy, gothic aesthetic fits the mood of the song quite well. As the band dances around the park, their playfulness not only highlights the chemistry the members have with each other, but with their audience as well. Watching them makes you feel like you’re one of the gang, in on whatever prank it is they’re playing. Give it a watch below!
