PREMIERE: The Late Great - "Shape of the Sea"

Expressing snarky banter and melancholy through fitting songwriting and equally expressive guitar work, The Late Great convey both innocence and feminist tones with their dark pop execution, as seen on their debut album Easy

The sincerity of the lyrics from "Shape of the Sea" are a good example of this, where songwriter and The Late Great leader Sarah Lane imparts strength and power by saying "I'll take on the shape of the sea/Lord go on & lay it down on me/I am your pride, I'm your enemy/So go on and take what you want from me." Women do take on a lot in the world and Lane welcomes that weight without fear - a message that's both relatable and empowering.

Easy will be digitally released on August 17, with a release show happening on August 20 at the Turn! Turn! Turn! with Mike Coykendall and Hollow Sidewalks. Dive into the "Shape of the Sea" below.

PREMIERE: Sheers - "Depth"

Art pop and classical stylings converge with elemental hip-hop and r&b through the new duo Sheers, and their distinctive debut single "Depth."

Lily Breshears heads up the duo, bringing her seasoned experience from working with artists such as Big Haunt and Haley Heynderickx along with classical training as a harpist and pianist to the table. Intertwined with her mastered piano playing are melodic refrains, emotionally pertinent lyrics and jazzy beats from drummer and collaborator Grant Pierce.

Produced by both Sheers and Scott Schaus and mastering done by David Polluck, "Depth" is only the starting point for what is sure to be an established effort for Breshears.

Sheers will be playing Mississippi Studios with Robin Bacior on the 17th, with a co-album release show also at Mississippi with Lynnae Gryffin on September 19th.

Check out the official premiere of "Depth" below.

NYC Artist on the rise: COTE's mellow pop

Newcomer pop artist COTE has clearly been keeping her ear's peeled to indie pop's current state of affairs. On the NYC artist's debut track, "London," she brings together dreamy guitar licks in addition to nostalgic synth patterns — both of which are hallmarks of today's pop landscape.  Her dark and sultry vocals might be slightly reminiscent of mellow-pop goddess Lana Del Rey, but make no mistake: her debut single 'London' shows a peronality that's all her own. Most importantly, this is a beautifully produced track that showcases a young artist with a noteworthy voice and very promising songwriting chops. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!

Pavo Pavo will make you happy, at National Sawdust tomorrow (08.04)

Pavo Pavo is one of those bands that make music lovers happy, without really being a happy band, and notwithstanding those unnecessary mustaches. It's just the celestial orchestration, the musical bits and pieces flawlessly coming together, we guess. This being sad, we wish they had more recorded songs! Nobody is happy about scarcity of what makes them happy, why do you do this to us, Pavo Pavo? Those of you who share the feeling should see these guys live tomorrow (August 4th) at wonderful new Brooklyn Venue National Sawdust - and yes, they'll be playing more than the two songs you can find online (also streaming below)!

Reptaliens Announce Cali Tour

When former members of BRAINSTORM, Wampire and Blouse creatively combine with parts of Fog Father, you get an indelibly lo-fi, twee, garage pop-like sound à la a cocktail of Cults, Beach House and Ariel Pink that is impossible not to lovingly drink up. That cocktail comes by the name of Portland group Reptaliens, and they're taking their delicious sounds on a musical ride down the West Coast.

Reptaliens as a group may be newer, but its members are vets in the Portland music scene that know their way around a tour or two. This upcoming week-long excursion will find them starting out with their tour kickoff as part of XRAY.fm's benefit show and making their way down to the sunny skies of Los Angeles for a few shows, before stopping in Eugene on their way back up to Portland.

Check out Reptalien's tour dates below and be sure to see them off properly at Dig A Pony!
