And And And the winner of The Deli's Best of Portland Emerging Artist of 2010 is...

Precious Readers of The Deli Portland,

The results in their total grandeur have landed (see list at the bottom), fans, jurors, writers, and all! Congratulations to the fine fellows of And And And for winning Best Portland Emerging Artist of 2010!

1. And And And

If we base it simply on number of albums produced, it's no surprise that &&& raked in the title of Best Emerging Artist. It doesn't hurt that they're amazing either. Self-releasing four EPs and/or albums in the past year, And And And has that old fashioned tenacity wrapped up with a sound that is unbearably Portland. Cacophonous and somehow precise, a scream-along-sing-along ride that you can kick up some dust to while still kicking back, they walk the line (or run down it, rather) of garage band or perhaps the next big thing to escape from our fair city. They’ve new album(s) in the works (surprise, surprise), so keep your eyes and ears open lest you miss an album or two

2. The Angry Orts

I'm not completely sure what an ort is, but The Angry Orts bring to mind anything but anger. Channeling something a little more serious than your average pop band, The Angry Orts are definitely something to keep an eye on, their music swinging from the grungiest you can get behind the precise vocals of Sara Hernandez, down to sentimental moments that speak something in the tune of She & Him

3. Monarques

The new old sound of Monarques is something to be reckoned with. You might think to find it spinning from an old 45, but it's brand new and ready for your dancing pleasure. I stick to my most recent words: the new seven-piece bounces out irrefutable pop from a bygone era that sure as all get out shouldn’t be gone. It’s part sock hop, part garage band, picking up echoes of all your favourite Motown and hints of The Beach Boys. Songs like “Angel Eyes” bring to mind the golden age of dancing grandparents (when they were still young, that is).

The Deli's Staff

huh? the sequel
Posted by Anonymous on February 09, 2011
So in the poll results summary posted today, the page that every deli website is linking to, the winner of the Portland Fan poll is the fan poll's #4 Radiation City, but when you click on the "full results" link you see its clearly Chervona. Am I just following things too closely? I guess so. There seem to be some other inconsistencies too, but i feel strange enough pointing out what I've found so far. This kind of ruins this site for me. : ( do everyone a favor and put chervona up there.

what is "OS = Open Submissions" ?
Don't be confused!
Posted by Mike Harper - Deli Portland Editor on February 03, 2011
The overall winner of the poll is decided by combining all of the points awarded by our writers, by the local jurors, and by the fans' poll. We'll be adding the entire list soon so you can see the breakdown! Hope this helps! Full results will be up soon!

Congrats &&&! im confused, though. if some of these bands weren't in the top 10 juror picks or in the top 10 popular picks, how do they win the overall poll? something seems fairly amiss in this process.

Which of these local acts should be our next Artist of the Month?

May 2011
Dave Depper
The Ram Project

mp3

When I heard that someone was going to attempt to cover Paul McCartney’s Ram, I was skeptical, to understate. Ram is one of my favourite non-Beatles albums by a Beatle, in contention alone with All Things Must Pass. To take on such a project, an artist would have to be filled with foolishness or musical zeal – or perhaps a hearty serving of both. In either case, the artist that tried this would have to have a musical background versatile enough to battle just the thought of McCartney’s career.

The gregariously multi-project-bound Dave Depper might be one of Portland’s best bets for such an endeavor. Taking a month to himself and starting with “Heart of The Country”, Dave dove right into The Ram Project. The skill behind Dave’s guitar, piano, drums, and Paulesque vocals were never a question. From the opening tenor-stretch of “Too Many People” to the extended growling end of “Monkberry Moon Delight” and back to the scatting interlude of “Heart of the Country”, Depper is spot on. The biggest question that loomed over listening to this record was the soul behind it. Would Dave, along with the darling Joan Hiller, really be able to transform into Paul & Linda?

As I let The Ram Project play in the background while I went about my days listening to the album, I was (and also, wasn’t) surprised to find that I would get lost in those lulling copies from Ram. I honestly must admit that the echo from another room of Dave’s voice hanging in the air during “Long Haired Lady” sparked such a feeling that made me forget that it wasn’t Paul behind the microphone.

Musical zeal and a lot less foolishness than you’d expect, the well-traveled notes of Ram couple perfectly with Dave’s well carved collection of past projects. It amazes me that it was just a month he took to record every part alone, but after looking at his musical experience it’s not surprising. He just rammed on and did it. And did a damned good job. - Mike Harper (review also featured on Words Cut Open)
